Key Insights

- profiling of patient does not factor in personality and are detached from the ward

- There is opportunity to include their human qualities to profiling

- there is opportunity in increasing the autonomy of patients in the ward

Day 12

On Tuesday we had a tutorial with Ian, which helped define the areas we wanted to work on. We tried to cover as many fields as we could, according to three keys : . 

We finally split into five small groups : tailoring the environment to facilitate student-patient informal meetings, teaching the humanistic skills of psychiatry through an art-based approach, redefining the case studies through a role-pay board game, experiencing the patient’s illness through simulation and facilitating the venue of the students through a « welcome pack ».

Key Insights

- We decided to stay linked in order to give coherence to the teaching programme we intended to make.

Day 13

On Wednesday we developed each of the topics. We made lots of research which helped us to see the actualities of the topics, what means we could engage and how the proposals would fit within the NHS. 

The « simulation » group tried to define what would be the best approach to set up  the experience of a simulation, using either analogue or technological means. 

Key Insights

- the making of a mind map about « teaching humanistic skills » made us realise how learning qualities such as observing and listening is more effective by engaging students into practical exercises.

Day 14

In order to have a more accurate knowledge of the patient’s symptoms, the « simulation » group made a mind map to list the physical effects of several mental illnesses. The group focusing on developing the interpersonal skills of psychiatry narrowed its research down to two senses : the eyes and the ears. They set up a first workshop involving some GSA students where they had to listen to a piece of music and analyse to musical phrases, the pace, the volume, in order to be more engaged in listening. For the purpose of the role play game, the group experienced a « dungeons and dragons session ». The whole group dynamic was positive and everyone wanted to experiment and try their concept out.

Key Insights

- Role play is a great ice breaker

Day 15

On Friday, several models for the VR glasses were tried, in paper and in cardboard, to try to make it suitable for simulation. The group found out they would probably work on more analogue way to realise the VR mask, using low tech sound and light effects as well. The first prints of the « welcome pack » enabled the group to go further into their research. The « humanistic skills » group set up its second workshop. This time, the students had to analyse a political speech.

Key Insight

- It is difficult to focus on the tone of the voice and in the same time on the content of the speech.

- Analogue simulation, if done well, can be as effective as digital
